FEAR/SHOCK-FREE SNAKE AVOIDANCE DAY CAMP - April 15, 2023 - LANDER, WY
DAY CAMP - Clinic on FEAR AND SHOCK-FREE Rattlesnake Avoidance.
DATES: April 15, 2023 11am Registration is open
We do not use shock collars or aversive methods.
Learn how to teach your dog to alert you to the presence of a rattlesnake and return to your side automatically.
Three to four hour camp, with instructional and practical application. You can add live coaching OR zoom coaching sessions for $50.
Supervised Practice sessions with trainer's equipment will be available throughout the summer for an additional cost of $35.
Required behaviors for class- If your dog does not have these behaviors, then we can do private sessions:
- Non-reactive to presence of other dogs or people (meaning won't bark and lunge at those triggers)
Required items for camp:
- long leash (15' minimum) with a carabiner rated for 3x your dog's weight (homemade leash is fine but I love the Mendota 15' Snap leash in 3/8" diameter! It is the best!)
- harness - I prefer the Blue 9 Balance Harness
- shorter multifunction leash or tether
- water
- LOTS of pea sized treats (variety is awesome!) that your dog finds very yummy (at least 50!)
- Stuffed Kong or other item for your dog to lick and chew on
- camp chair (optional)
What should you expect?
- Camp is 3-4 hours long, with a break of 30-60 minutes roughly in the middle.
- Part 1 is without dogs. Instructional only. You will receive a handout with instructions and resources, as well as a survey to determine which behaviors you want to choose for your dog's alert. We will go over the materials used in the training process, and discuss the options for teaching these behaviors.
- Part 2, following the break (so you can go home and get your dog, and hydrate or grab a snack) we will resume with dogs, and we can introduce the behaviors , and pair them with the environmental cues. We start with the scent, then the sound, and then add the visual of the snake.
Having a camp chair to sit on and a stuffed Kong for your dog helps your dog settle during the instructional of Part 2, and when other people are practicing.
If you pay with a credit card ahead of the class, you will receive the instructional materials in advance of the class.
To register, please fill out a Day Camp form, found on the Forms page. You can pay online here or with cash/check at the time of class. Payment in full is due by the start of the class.
